BENEFITING: WAKING THE VILLAGE
At Tubman House, our residents are daring daily as each pursues a sustaining future. The Double Dog Dare Campaign is a fundraising campaign that invites you into the action. It's easy! 1. Pick a goal or a dream or a crazy idea. 2. Ask the world (or at least your Facebook friends): Do you DARE me to ________________? 3. Make your Double Dog Dare campaign page on a simple, online platform so friends and family can sponsor you to reach your goal AND raise funds for the young parents and children of Tubman House. Tell Me More About Those Dares Dares range from the inspiring to the absurd. They might represent a wild dream, a big change, a new commitment, a small sacrifice, or pure and wild silliness. Your dare may be that small nudge (or hard shove) you need to do something, quit something, gain something, lose something, or make a fool of yourself at karoake. The idea is that you get the blessing of a daring deed done and Tubman benefits from the donations that allow us to grow our programs. The possibiities include, but are not limited to: climbing Half Dome, meeting every neighbor on your block, joining the succulent society, giving up sweets or cigarettes or late night TV, performing opera on your light rail commute, training for a 5K, eating less meat, drinking more water, meditating 15 minutes a day, juice fasting, giving yoga a try, biking to work, calling your mom every day, reading all of Toni Morrison's novels, starting a blog, building one of those tiny houses, learning to skateboard, planting a garden, shaving your head, dying your hair blue, performing your music or spoken word or poetry or magic tricks or stand up comedy at the open mic, writing the first ten chapters of your autobiography, proposing to the love of your life in a spectacular flash mob production at the taqueria where you went on your first date, learning Irish step dancing, identifying 50 plants that grow in your neighborhood, launching your pet guinea pig into fame with a viral video of her squeaking "This Land is Your Land," organizing a family renunion complete with talent show, posting on Facebook a video of dousing yourself with slime, colored powders, mud, oobleck, ash, or anything not completely trademarked by other fundraising events, planting a tree a week for a year, or just about ANY IDEA you are ready to hatch. Be Daring. Why Dare for Tubman House? Tubman House is no 30 day shelter. We are in for the long haul. Our clients do not manage crisis- they conquer it. Tubman serves young parents (18 to 21 years old) and their children as they overcome homelessness and trauma. Each resident stays up to 18 months, receiving free housing and relentless support to become leaders in their own lives- and leaders in the lives of their children and communities. How do we convince a young woman or a young journeying through hard times that the world holds beauty and possibility? We offer a home instead of a shelter. Get each to the ocean and the snow. Give plenty of time. Offer love. Believe in each. Hand over the reigns. Share possibilities, but don’t declare a path as they consider career, college, and ways forward. Let each explore and make a path in that wandering. Remind each constantly of the strengths you see within. Forgive the bad moments. Let each decide when to embrace the practical and when to celebrate the absurd. Give the freedom and trust each young adult deserves. Let's Do This! Ready to dare?
