THE STORY:

Thank you for visiting the Peaceful Men’s Hiking Group’s Hike for SHELTER fundraising page!  We’re a group of San Ramon Valley men who enjoy hiking together and supporting SHELTER, Inc. in this annual event.

SHELTER, Inc. believes that every child should have a home.  But we know that too many families are homeless and without hope.  They struggle to keep a roof over their children’s heads.  The high cost of rental housing and the lack of fundamental skills, such as literacy and job skills, put even more families at risk.  SHELTER, Inc. gives homeless and at-risk families a safe place to live, meeting their most basic needs, while offering individualized services such as education, employment development and counseling.  SHELTER, Inc.’s dedicated professionals provide families life-long tools that allow them to transform their lives and the future for their children.

SHELTER, Inc.’s mission is to prevent and end homelessness among low-income residents of Contra Costa County by providing resources that lead to self-sufficiency. The homelessness prevention program has been particularly effective, helping over 4,000 men, women and children last year.  An amazing 97% of those helped by SHELTER, Inc. were able to stay off the streets and in their homes, and for less than 15% of the cost of helping them if they had become homeless!

SHELTER, Inc. takes homeless families off the streets, places them in safe, temporary homes and provides services, whatever it takes, to help them regain self-sufficiency and a permanent home.  An impressive 85% move on to permanent housing, much greater than the national standard of 65%.  Meanwhile, 73% of the adults who completed SHELTER, Inc.’s Employment Program obtained a job and/or increased their wages.

Providing SHELTER for many - one step at a time!

Hike for SHELTER is a team effort to help raise awareness of homelessness in our community.  On October 19, we Peaceful Men will join two hundred other hikers on three different trails in Mount Diablo State Park to raise $100,000 for SHELTER, Inc. to keep these critical programs going.

Please consider sponsoring me or our team and help end family homelessness in our community.  Donating through this website is simple, fast and totally secure. Your 100% tax-deductible donation will help provide services to keep families together in their homes.  You will make a difference!

Many thanks for your support -- and don't forget to share this page with anyone who you think might want to donate too!
