Dear Family and Friends -

Tomorrow, I leave for Ocean City to support my fifth consecutive Ride for the Feast--and I do so with a lot of gratitude for your generosity and support. As of this writing, your combined contributions come to nearly $3500--enough to feed 100 clients for a week!

Your gifts are especially meaningful in the context of the current turmoil in Baltimore. Following is a message that MF Executive Director Tom Bonderenko released today, and it speaks volumes about the kind of organization that MF is, and it leaves not doubt why they are deserving of our support.

I'll be in touch after the ride to let you know how it went. For now, I thank you again.

Gratefully,
Doug

A MESSAGE FROM MOVEABLE FEAST

For 25 years, Moveable Feast has provided nutritious food to some of Baltimore’s most vulnerable citizens: those facing serious, critical illnesses and often, dire poverty. For these individuals FOOD=MEDICINE.

This morning, we interviewed 18 candidates for our food-based workforce development program. They come to us for training that offers the opportunity to obtain stable employment that pays a living wage.

The philosophy of Moveable Feast has never been more real and more vital than today: to FEED, FIGHT and FOSTER hope! The greatest level of support we can offer our City during this time of trial is to refuse to relent or recede in any way, in our commitment to our mission.

Tuesday morning, and all through this week, our staff and volunteer drivers have been out delivering life-sustaining food to our clients. I want to thank them, and the members of the community who volunteer with us, for their passion and tenacity during these difficult days. They have talked with our city’s residents, assuring them that they are not alone, providing comfort to those who are scared. Many of these individuals live in the center of the protests and riots. For us, it may be a promise of peace, but for them, the sight of the National Guard and State Police lining their streets has been terrifying. As one individual commented, “it looks like what I see on the news about Afghanistan.”

We understand the issues at hand are neither simple nor singular. We are committed to playing whatever role is appropriate for us in restoring peace to our community and in ensuring that every citizen is treated justly, with equal opportunities for housing and employment, and the right to be regarded, in every situation, with dignity and respect.

With gratitude,
Tom

Stuff About Me:

Everyone knows what it's like to be very sick. You don't want to get out of bed, let alone cook a healthful meal for yourself--or your family.

Many of us also know someone who has gone through illnesses related to cancer, HIV/AIDS, and other life-challenging conditions. Taking care of yourself becomes even more difficult, especially if you lack financial resources or family support.

Personally, I know this too well. As a person living with AIDS, and a 25-year survivor of HIV, I have had times when I lacked the energy to prepare a healthful meal. Fortunately, I have family and friends who could carry me through those difficult times. But not everyone is as fortunate as I am.

That's why I participate in Moveable Feast's Ride for the Feast. All contributions to RFTF go to services for clients who are financially challenged, living with HIV/AIDS, cancer, or other chronic conditions, and in need of home-delivered, medically nutritious meals, transportation to medical appointments, and other basic human needs. When necessary, Moveable Feast also feeds the client's family, so that everyone in the home can be healthy and strong. I participate in RFTF to help those who haven't been as fortunate as I have been.

I hope you will join me in this important effort. This is Moveable Feast's 25th Anniversary--and my fifth year providing support and gear (SAG) services for the cyclists (300 this year!) as they make their way along the 140 mile route from Ocean City, MD, to Baltimore.

Your contribution can make a real difference in a person's life:

...$35 delivers nutritious meals to one person for one week

...$70 delivers nutritious meals to one person for two weeks

...$140 delivers nutritious meals to one person for an entire month

...$840 delivers nutritious meals to one person for six months

Thanks in advance for your support!
