Downriver Swims is the YMCA's effort to teach water safety to Downriver's special needs students. We are currently serving schools in Southgate, Wyandotte, Taylor, Lincoln Park, and Romulus.
We serve students with various disabilities including cognitive impairments, autism spectrum disorder (ASD), physical impairments, down syndrome, and cerebral palsy. Students with these special needs have several obstacles to learning how to swim, and consequently have a unique risk for drowning and other water related injuries.
Our team of trained instructors work to overcome barriers these students face. Students who participate in Downriver Swims are provided with water safety classes during the school day. Through the generous support of donors we are able to provide these classes at no cost to the schools or to the students' families.
We are asking for support so that we can continue our work in the 5 districts we are currently serving. All together we are serving over 90 different students with water safety classes. Your donation will allow us to continue do serve those students for the remainder of the spring, as well as allowing us to run a summer program at the YMCA.
