THE STORY:

In 1993 when Florence Garrett was born in London, the doctors diagnosed her with Down’s syndrome. British specialists assisted her and made it possible for her to go to a normal school, speak English and French, ride a bicycle and do everything that any other peer of hers would do. Florence’s uncle, who worked in Moscow at the time, was shocked when he found out that the vast majority of Russian parents abandon their children with Down syndrome because of society’s negative attitudes towards the condition. In Russia, there was and still is no Federal Bill on special education. In 1996, together with his sister and couple of friends, Florence’s uncle established Downside Up. Our team at OLMA in France, a boutique advisory firm, found out about Downside Up only when the Founder of DSU and our team member-Jeremy, mentioned to us that he was going to Kilimanjaro in October this year. As humble as he is, only after we insisted on knowing why, he told us that he had challenged himself to climb Mount Kilimanjaro year after year to raise money and awareness for his charity. Challenging oneself to climb Africa's highest mountain is nothing compared to the daily struggle felt by the Russian children, and we felt that we were also willing to take on that challenge both for Jeremy and for his charity. Together, we decided that this year, we would climb the mountain alongside him. As a part of the charity effort, everyone that goes on the climb commits to raising $1500 per person for Downside Up. We are a team made up of people from the United Kingdom, France, Australia, Armenia, and Nepal. We have managed to collect all the finances we need for our accommodation and travel to Tanzania and are now in the process of collecting the $1500 that will all go towards DSU. We are a 9 person team, and want to raise $13500. We can make a bit of an effort on our own, but need some support from the Crowdrise Family to help us reach our goal. The company has also agreed to match every donation we raise, doubling the impact of your efforts. If you want more information on what DSU is and how they have helped the children in Russia, follow this link: http://www.downsideupcharity.org/. Help us help them :)
