Down syndrome clinic updates - WE ARE HAVING A PARTY!
November 22, 2017
Individuals with Down syndrome are wonderful persons, with great humor, sociability, and empathy. Down syndrome is a common genetic condition that is associated with various physical and mental health issues. As such, patients with Down syndrome benefit from expert and coordinated care. The Charles J. Epstein Down Syndrome Clinic at UCSF Benioff Children’s Hospital Oakland aims at enhancing the care of young patients with Down syndrome in the Bay Area by providing multidisciplinary care, offering assistance with care coordination, and connecting families to social support and community organizations. It also contributes to research efforts, participates in community outreach, and educates physicians in training on health issues associated with Trisomy 21. Each visit includes a comprehensive review of each child’s physical and mental health, including a review of development, independence with activities of daily living, behavioral concerns, and review of educational services. We also host an annual holiday party to foster a sense of community and facilitate parent to parent support.
We are currently fundraising to expand our support services, including a library a resources for family and support staff for the clinic. Every dollar makes a difference!
