The money I raise for this personal challenge and goal will be donated to the GO Project. This should be an obstacle course that is about more than me, but also the others who have obstacles in their paths every day that I have been privileged not to face.
I loved working with middle school students last year in keeping up in their chemistry, history, and English classes. They are bright students and excited to learn - they just need the tools and confidence to know they can succeed despite physical, economic, and institutional obstacles in their paths.
About the students:
100% are 1-2 years behind their peers when they enter the program in kindergarten.
89% are eligible for free or reduced lunch, a federal indicator of poverty.
52% have a special education classification
52% attend a high need public school
46% are from single-parent homes.
15% are English Language Learners.
49% are Hispanic, 20% are Asian, 15% are Black, and 9% are multi-racial.
