THE STORY:

We are raising funds to create a memorial grant in honour of our dear friend and colleague, Dr Deborah Moore, a Canadian primatologist dedicated to the study and conservation of chimpanzees and bonobos who recently lost her battle with breast cancer. Deb received her PhD from the University of Texas at San Antonio, where she studied a community of unhabituated chimps in Western Tanzania, often traveling alone in harsh circumstances, as the chimps fled from human contact. It was during this time that she was diagnosed with breast cancer. Despite this, upon graduation, she shifted her research focus to a close relative of the chimpanzee, bonobos, and traveled to the rainforest of the Democratic Republic of the Congo working with the Bonobo Conservation Initiative. Deb was only a couple of months into her planned year-long stay when the cancer came back and she had to return to Canada. She passed away on March 22, 2016 at the age of 51. As a recent PhD graduate yet to secure a full time position at a university, Deb was acutely aware of the challenges facing early career researchers seeking to secure funding to support primatological studies in the field. Comparatively, a lot of funding is available for graduate student projects and for researchers in tenure or tenure-track positions at universities. In her honour, we are raising funds to offer a grant specifically for early career primatologists who are in a similar career state as Deb was when she passed away. The Dr Deborah Moore Memorial Grant for Early Career Primatologists will be hosted by the American Society of Primatologists. Our aim is to offer 3 grants per year of $2000 USD each to exceptional early career researchers in primatology. Promising new primatologists able to continue the legacy set by Dr. Deborah Moore and without other funding sources available to them are encouraged to apply.
