Dr. Patricia Berg
I am a Professor of Biochemistry and Molecular Medicine at the George Washington University School of Medicine in Washington, DC. I am a graduate of the University of Chicago and the Illinois Institute of Technology with a Ph.D. in Microbiology. I have had over 50 publications about my research, and have been awarded major grants from organizations including the NIH, Susan G. Komen, and the Avon Foundation.
In 2016, I was selected as a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) for contributions in Biological Sciences. Election as an AAAS Fellow is an honor bestowed upon AAAS members by their peers. The press release is available here.
While at the National Institutes of Health (NIH), I discovered a gene called BP1 (Human Beta Protein 1) that has since been found to be activated in at least 5 types of cancer: breast, ovarian, lung, leukemia, and prostate. My current research priority is to develop a blood test for BP1 to aid in early diagnosis, prognosis, and detection of recurrence of cancer. This will be the first assay (test) to be developed to detect a protein in blood for cancer.
