Draggin' on the Road: Help Get Drag King Chris Rod to Cali
Organized by: Christy Rodriguez de Conte
Every Drag King deserves a stage he can share with his fellow Kings; a space for women who perform gender to collide and create through story. This King needs YOU to get him to the San Francisco stage. King Chris Rod, a devilishly handsome and charming Drag King, has been performing along the east coast for over 10 years. From his theatrical performances in the live version of a cult classic, "Rocky Horror Show", as Eddie & Dr. Scott or his annual performance at the Lake Worth Playhouse's "Send in the Queens" to his more intimate club appearances in many a gay and lesbian bar, King Chris Rod bends gender with grace and flair - and quite a bit of showmanship. His most recent appearance as the co-host of the Boston Pride at Faneuil Hall allowed for King Chris Rod to combine his work in community activism with performance, a marriage he hopes to nurture and grow through this project. So what is this project you speak of King Chris Rod? Well, with your help, I intend to make my cross country jump on to the San Francisco stage at the 21st annual Drag King Competition. What makes this opportunity so amazing is the fact that it will be a competition filled only with Drag Kings. That is beyond rare. In fact in the last competition I competed in I was surrounded by Drag Queens (not one King) and was in competition with cis-men for the title of Boston Pride King. NO MORE! It is time to shine a light on the sultry world of Drag Kings and honor those spaces where women can come together to express gender in a supportive community. As a whole this project will serve as more than one King's journey. In addition to performing, King Chris Rod's work will be the study of Christy Rodriguez de Conte's Doctoral Dissertation. Through this project stories will serve to guide the research. By gathering stories from fellow Drag Kings, King Chris Rod strives to answer questions about lesbian space and performance. In this fluid world of gender, where has the space for lesbians to perform their own version of femininity as Drag Kings gone? How has the loss of the lesbian community performance space been internalized and where has it been saved and revitalized? have the space in to perform the work they choose to? How does the all of this manifest itself on a stage? All this and more! This journey will be start of a much longer trek across several stages, but one that cannot begin without your generous donation. You can support Queer Theatre and help bring King Chris Rod to his people! Building community is what it is all about. You donations are greatly appreciated. There it is folks! Now it is your turn to dig in and help a brother out!
