The Division of Sports Medicine
The Division of Sports Medicine at Cincinnati Children's is focused on delivering expert care to the young athlete and improving physical health and activity for all youth within the community. We offer the only program in the Midwest with a full spectrum of care for young athletes, from concussion care and performance training to orthopaedic surgery and sports physical therapy. We are composed of sports medicine physicians, researchers, and athletic trainers who are committed to improving the health of children through physical activity and sports. Through relationships with CPS high schools and athletics, we work with over 1,000 student athletes in CPS.
A Collaborative Research Model
We are home to research investigators focused on promoting physical activity and sports participation in youth. We capitalize on strong collaborations between the Divisions of Sports Medicine, Orthopaedics, Physical Therapy, the Heart Institute, and others in the Cincinnati Children’s Research Foundation, to produce hypothesis-driven discoveries focused on using sports participation and physical activity for health promotion and disease prevention. Over the past 14 years, the researchers from the Division of Sports Medicine have produced some of the most progressive and clinically translatable data related to injury prevention in youth athletes.
Focus on Community Outreach
We believe all student athletes should have the same access to health care. We also believe excellent health care for sports can lead to improved sports participation, school attendance, graduation rates and college entry. At Cincinnati Children's, we are engaged in and committed to the Cincinnati Public Schools (CPS):
Prior to our involvement, only two CPS high schools had athletic training (AT) involvement and team physicians. These schools had the lowest percentage of students from disadvantaged families. We have stepped in to now provide services to seven CPS high schools.
In FY2015, Cincinnati Children's Sports Medicine invested over $330,000 in staff time and resources at no charge to the Cincinnati Public Schools.
This helps ensure CPS student-athletes have immediate access to the highest trained sports medicine staff, helping them avoid misdiagnosis or unnecessary emergency department visits.
You Can Help
As a nonprofit pediatric medical and research center, we rely on the philanthropic support of our friends to help us advance discovery, improve care, and change lives. Your gift will help us continue to transform pediatric healthcare, impacting families for generations to come.
The Division of Sports Medicine at Cincinnati Children’s is passionate about helping young athletes reach their fullest potential. Together, we have an opportunity to positively affect physical health, academic success, and opportunities overall for the future quality of life for our community’s youth. Together, we can advance discovery to benefit more children. Together, we can help kids in Cincinnati and beyond achieve their optimal health and reach their full potential.
