Drama classes for kids on the Autism Spectrum
Organized by: Kristina Blake
For a parent of a child with Autism, watching them go off to school each day and knowing there is no group of friends to meet them, few kids willing to put in the amount of effort that a friendship with a kid on the Spectrum takes, is a heartbreaking experience. Participation in the performing arts can be a tremendous blessing to a child who struggles with severe social challenges. These kids are literally dependent on their ability to "act" like everybody else in order to function in society. What better training ground for the thousands of children who are diagnosed with an Autism Spectrum Disorder every day. Seedling Theatre Company is a brand new children's performing arts venture in Henderson, NV, opening in January 2017. My husband and I are starting this business for many reasons, but having a son with autism has inspired us to dedicate a division of our theatre program to kids on the spectrum. There is an endless amount of classes, clubs, camps, leagues, teams, and opportunities for "typical" children to find and develop their talents and skills. But any parent of children with special needs will tell you that those kind of opportunities are scarce for our kids. This is why we are including Drama and Vocal performance classes for kids on the Spectrum in our opening season course line-up. We are in need of funding to get our whole operation off the ground, but are specifically hoping with this appeal to ensure we can hire and retain qualified instructors, license plays and music for these kids to perform, and support the operating costs of the theatre so that we can continue to provide this unique program to a very deserving population of youth. Feel free to check out our website at seedlingtheatrecompany.com or visit us on Facebook as well. We would be eternally grateful for any support you can give us. Thank You!
