Drawing Helps Reading
Organized by: John Sawin
"Drawing Helping Reading" is a proposed joint project between Montague & Whitehall Schools. The project integrates art & writing, combining the talents of artist Lori Eslick and writing objectives from the Common Core State Standards. Ms. Eslick, a highly awarded artist and illustrator, will conduct 10-12 weekly workshops in 2 classrooms; 1 each in Whitehall and Montague. The construct is that teaching children to illustrate gives them a unique way of understanding text. Ms. Eslick will facilitate learning of vocabulary, context, voice, writing, and the art of illustrating. Over the course of the workshop each student creates a book to be shared at an author's day celebration; parents and community members will be invited. The workshop will also include a visit from African American Children's author Debbie Taylor, and a Skype interview the Dream Quest series author Janie Panogopoulos.
