BENEFITING: City of Hope
Benefiting: The Board of Governors of City of Hope has already funded $250,000 of our committed $300,000 for Dr. Jacob Berlin's innovative research using nanotechnology to radically speed up cures for cancer. We ask for your immediate help to finish the funding of this important research project.
Dr. Berlin’s lab is on the brink of a revolution in drug discovery as dramatic as the one that transformed computing over the last half century, but your help is needed.
A comparison to the development of personal computers, tablets and mobile phones is totally appropriate. In 1965, at the dawn of the microcomputer era, Dr. Gordon Moore predicted that miniaturizing components of computer chips would lead to exponential increases in the power and sophistication of computers. Dr Moore would soon join the other founders of Intel Corporation. His prediction became known as “Moore’s Law” and over the years has transformed nearly every aspect of our lives. Today, Dr. Berlin has reached a similar inflection point as a relatively new technology, nanotechnology, stands poised to change our lives in a deep and profound way.
Currently the discovery of new drugs is prohibitively expensive, painstaking slow and worst of all, often fails to produce any new drugs for patients afflicted with particularly malignant cancers.
Nanotechnology provides an opportunity to change the game, miniaturizing drug discovery so that up to 1,000 potential drugs can be inexpensively and quickly tested in an area no larger than the head of a pin. This technology will allow researchers to test more drugs in a single day than are currently tested over the span of several years and at a fraction of current costs.
When fully realized, Dr. Berlin expects to be able to test 1,000,000 and ultimately 1B potential drugs in the same pin-head space! He is already testing 500,000 on the size of a pin head!
Selective therapy is the future of cancer treatment, and time is of the essence. In partnership with City of Hope, Berlin’s lab is focused on getting nanotechnology-based drug discovery running at full speed so that new drugs can move from the research lab to patient bedsides as rapidly as possible, because those fighting cancer cannot afford to wait. Your donation will go directly toward making this breakthrough a reality, as it is moved from the prototype phase to a fully functional system that can begin delivering new potential drugs for those in need. The first use will be to find drugs to treat resistant prostate and breast cancers.
The Board of Governors, an active group of leaders from business, public life and the community raises funds for directed research at City of Hope. City of Hope will match, by in-kind support, those funds raised by the Board of Governors.
Please join The Board of Governors and help us complete the funding this new, important, exponential leap of cutting edge research to find cures for cancer.
On behalf of Dr. Berlin’s research team, City of Hope and patients everywhere, thank you for your support.
