Girls who participate in sports are more likely to stay in school, choose a healthy lifestyle, have self-confidence and to be future leaders in our communities. All girls should have the opportunity to participate in sports not matter their financial situation. Dream Big! is one organization helping girls have that chance. Over the past four years Dream Big! has had a direct impact on more than 10,000 girls in low income situations, through equipment donations, program scholarships, sports clinics and the Dream Big! Leadership Conferences for middle and high school female athletes.
As a mother of a five year-old girl and a lifelong sports-addict myself, I am passionate about supporting girls in sports and physical activities. A childhood spent playing basketball, soccer and cheering for all Boston sports teams, taught me lessons I still use today in teamwork, hard work and perseverance. It is fun to watch my daughter shape her own personality, which right now centers around wearing running clothes every day, being one of the only girls playing soccer and football at recess, getting excited about ski season and spending hours on Heartbreak Hill cheering on runners and waiting patiently for her mom.
Last year I was lucky enough to run my first marathon, our beloved Boston Marathon, for Dream Big! and I am thrilled to be running the 2015 Boston Marathon for Dream Big! again. I believe in their mission and I have witnessed first-hand the gifts they give to Boston-area girls. In June, I spent the day volunteering at the Dream Big! Leadership Conference and watched young girls be inspired by the lessons they learned from women athletes and professionals. One girl told me “I learned so much today. I am so motivated to work even harder than I have been.”
I truly appreciate any donation you can give. Here are examples of how your donation will be put to good use:
$35 will purchase a regulation soccer ball or basketball
$50 will purchase a pair a new pair of sneakers or cleats
$100 pays for an 8 week dance or fitness class for 1 girls
$200 Pays for a new bike and helmet
$500 pays for a week long summer sports camp
Running the marathon this past year was one of the best events of my life. The day itself was the most beautiful celebration of strength and unity for our city and all of the runners, and for me a celebration with family and friends. I had a blast with the training and was humbled by generosity I witnessed with my fundraising. I met the most amazing Dream Big! teammates and was inspired by many fellow runners and coaches on our Marathon Coalition training group. I had many adventures running during the New England winter, even fitting in training runs while on trips to Utah and Patagonia in Chile and Argentina. I cannot wait to get started this year again, which will be extra special as my brother-in-law, Dan, and college roommate, Liz, are also both running. The Boston Marathon is magical, and I am honored to be a part of it.
Thank YOU for being an important part of this journey and for supporting Dream Big! as they help so many young girls in the Boston area, even this old girl, reach their big dreams.
