On April 20th I am proud to be running in the 2015 Boston Marathon for Dream Big!, a charity that provides girls from low-income situations with uniforms, athletic footwear, program fees, training expenses, sports opportunities and the supplies they need to participate in sports and physical activities that contribute to their health, education and overall well-being.
Unfortunately, poverty can severely limit a young girl’s involvement in sports. Imagine trying to run the Boston Marathon without the proper foot wear or sports attire. Every day a girl in need steps on the playing field, court or track without the proper footwear, equipment, sports attire or training they deserve. Launched in Massachusetts in 2010, Dream Big! has already had a direct, positive effect on more than 10,000 girls in need through equipment donations, program scholarships, sports clinics and the Dream Big! Leadership Conferences for middle & high school girls.
Stefanie and I have three incredible daughters: 17 years, 15 years and 10 years old. Before we had ever heard of Dream Big! we incorporated their mission into the way we have raised our girls. Our 10-year old daughter was diagnosed with Global Apraxia as a baby and every skill she has achieved has been due to the hard work of her therapists, teachers, and her family. Growing up alongside a sibling with a disability forges complicated feelings; however, our oldest girls have learned to be flexible, generous and appreciative of their health and the opportunities they have been given. They have come to recognize how hard their sister works to be successful. As a result, even as teenagers, they have developed early maturity and increased patience, tolerance and acceptance of difference. Stefanie and I strongly encourage all of our daughters to think about themselves and to reach beyond their comfort zone to push and test their limits. They do this knowing that learning and experiencing new things will only positively contribute to who they are.
I started running in June 2012. I recently completed the New York Road Runners Five Borough Series: New York City Half Marathon in March 2014, Brooklyn Half Marathon in May 2014, Queens 10k in June 2014, Bronx 10 mile in September 2014 and the Staten Island Half Marathon in October 2014. I have shown my family and myself that even at the age of 48 it’s never too late to realize your dreams and fitness is an important component to a wonderful life. I know training for the Boston Marathon and simultaneously fundraising for Dream Big! will show them that you can improve yourself and also help others!
Over the next six months the Dream Big! Marathon Team, made up of myself and 15 other runners from around the world, will work to raise over $150,000 for Dream Big!. I hope you will join me in support of this important cause by sponsoring my 26.2 mile marathon run with a donation to Dream Big!. The money I raise will help to impact thousands of girls this year. For example, $35 –Will purchase a regulation soccer ball or basketball; $50 will purchase a new pair of sneakers or cleats; $100 pays for an 8 week dance or fitness class; $200 pays for a new bike and helmet; $500 pays for a week long summer sports camp; $1000 pays for new uniforms, equipment and training for an entire sports team. I hope you will join me by making a donation today to Dream Big! in recognition of my run. I am appreciative of any support you can give to this remarkable cause. No donation is too little, no gesture too small. THANK YOU!
