I signed up for the 2016 Boston Marathon fifteen minutes after finishing my 2015 run. I walked into the Marathon Coalition after-party wet from the rain and barely able to move. As I took off my sneakers, Dream Big! CEO Linda Driscoll asked me, "so, do we have you for another year?". "Yes of course!" I was ready to go again.
I run Boston for the energy in the basement of the church in Newton before a training run, for Comm Ave, for snow banks, and for winter in Boston, and for spring in Boston. I run Boston for my kind, dedicated teammates, and for the even kinder volunteers holding water and playing music on freezing Saturdays in February. I run Boston for my incredibly generous friends and my family, and my strangers, who show me how small the world is, and what an impact we can have. I run Boston because I feel strong when I accomplish this incredible task with this amazing team. I run for Dream Big! because I want other girls to feel this strong too.
Dream Big! works to provide girls from low-income and homeless situations with the equipment, uniforms, athletic footwear, program fees, training expenses, sports opportunities and the supplies they need to participate in sports and physical activities that contribute to their health, education and overall well-being. Unltimately, the goal is to empower young women through sports to rise above economic barriers and achieve more.
The Boston Marathon means a lot to Dream Big! When our seventeen runners train even when runs are cancelled, reach out to more people for donations, and bake cakes to raise funds, we're proving that sports are powerful, and that girls who play sports are powerful. I am so lucky to represent this team.
