I am extremely excited and humbled to be running my first marathon in Boston for the Dream Big! charity team! The mission of Dream Big! is one that I feel very connected to and I know will carry me through the next 5 months of training and 26.2 miles on April 17th.
I have spent the last 4 years working in schools in low income communities, so the mission of Dream Big! immediately grabbed my attention. During my first year of teaching I noticed our students didn’t have the same athletic opportunities that I did growing up. I was involved in every sport possible: ice hockey, soccer, volleyball, basketball, track, softball, etc. I tried everything because I lived in a community where I had access to these programs, and I also had a family who was able to financially support my athletic pursuits. Two years ago I started an after school sports program at my school in Oklahoma City in an effort to provide our students with the same athletic experiences as kids who live 10 miles away in a wealthier neighborhood. The program was a success and I knew this was something I would be invested in for the rest of my life.
As a teacher, and now a director of school operations, I know playing sports instilled grit, teamwork, leadership, and a never give up attitude that I carry with me in all aspects of my life. Athletics gave me a skillset that I would have never picked up in the classroom alone and I am forever grateful for my experiences.
Not every young girl has the same opportunities that I was afforded growing up. Dream Big! strives to solve that problem. Dream Big! works to provide girls from low-income situations with the equipment, uniforms, athletic footwear, program fees, training expenses, and sports opportunities they need to participate in sports and physical activities that contribute to their health, education, and overall well-being.
My goal is raise $8,000 to allow more young women to find their passion in sports like I did. No donation is too small and I am grateful for any amount you can donate. Here are examples of what your donation can do:
- $35 –Will purchase a regulation soccer ball or basketball
- $50 will purchase a pair a new pair of sneakers or cleats
- $100 pays for an 8 week dance or fitness class for 1 girl
- $200 Pays for a new bike and helmet
- $500 pays for a week long summer sports camp
- $1000 pays for new uniforms, equipment and training for an entire sports team
- $2500 pays for physical education equipment for one full year for hundreds of children in an elementary or middle school
- $10,000 pays for a new community based sports program for 100 female athletes.
Thank you for your consideration and support. I know the mission of Dream Big! and your support will get me through 26.2 miles.
Wishing you all the best,
