We will be highlighting their bios here and on our website so that you may know the determination, resilience, excellence, achievements and motivation that they possess. Your contribution will directly provide scholarships for these young moms in the Fall 2013 semester.

1) Shatia Burks
I am 20 years old, my son is 6 months
Attending Bronx Community College Fall 2013
College Major: Education
After I graduate I'll be enrolling in either a four year college preferably Barnard College or doing Teach For America
My hobbies are running track and spending quality time with my son
So far I've achieved gaining an internship with Inwood House PRIME Leaders program. I sit as a board member on the Department of Youth and Community Development Runaway and Homeless Youth Advisory Comittee. Also I do a young mother's advocacy program for National Institute for Reproductive Health.
I've benefitted from YMD by not only gaining a circle of friends for life. But it also helped me make connections with other organization like National Institute for Latina Reproductive Health.
This scholarship will help me continue achieving my goal to become a teacher. Due to me coming from an underprivileged background and trying to help other underprivileged youth I won't be able to obtain that without the necessary resources to complete my journey.
2) Perlita Diaz
I’m 18 years old and my son Isaac is 2 years old.
I will be attending LaGuardia Community College Fall 2013
My college major is Veterinary Technology.
After I graduate I will work as a Veterinary Technician to save up money to go back to school to become a Veterinarian. I hope that with my experience I will be able to open up a shelter to help stray, abused, and lost animals.
I like to read about animals (especially dogs and cats), I tutor kids, I love to spend time with my dogs and my son, whenever possible I rescue animals in need big or small and if I cannot keep them I find them a good home.
I currently have a 3.9 GPA and I am working as a dog walker. With the tutoring I give to kids they have improved in school and they are more self-confident. I am also a member of the NLIRH and we do lobbying and panel discussions.
I have benefited from participating in a Young Mothers Dream by gaining confidence in myself. I learned to believe in my ideas and that in order to reach my goals I needed to at least try before giving up. I also gained beautiful friendships that will flourish more over time. YMD also gave me a safe place where I could talk about my problems and talk about my achievements. My achievements weren’t just mine they were all of our achievements because we helped push each other towards our goals and thanks to that we did what others thought to be the Impossible. A Young Mothers Dream taught us that everything is Possible as long as you are Determined, Resilient, you Strive for Excellence, and you are Motivated you will achieve your goals.
This scholarship would help me in buying necessary books, paying for my transportation to school, affording to pay a baby sitter when I need to go to school and no one can help me watch my son. This scholarship would also help me to pay my transportation fees to do my required externship in Veterinary Technology. We would be responsible in paying for our method of transportation, housing, food expenses, etc. This scholarship would eliminate any risk of having to drop out for a semester due to financial need.
3) Octavia Davis
I am 18, with an 18 month old son named Tracy. So far I have been accepted to both cuny school's that I applied to, and I'm still waiting to hear from one more school (suny school) to see if I was accepted. If I do get accepted I want to major in Fashion design.
After I finish with school I would like to design my own line & open a business.
For fun I draw, exercise and joke around. I passed all my classes on time , with a gpa of 3.0, finished most my college work, paid my dues, and got rid of all Tracy's shots.
YMD helped me have a positive environment, that linked me to positive people and organizations that helped me calm down & find myself.
