Dreamer's After School Program
Organized by: Sage deLisser
The Dreamers After School program has been running for about three years. It was founded by Mrs. Theresa Perkins, a longtime resident of Sarasota. She is a Sarasota County PAL leader and has earned the Child Development Associate designation and certificate. The program started when Mrs. Perkins and her daughter Latrecia Castleberry noticed a lot of the children in their neighborhood spending their after school time idle. We offer students free homework and tutoring help to get their math skills, reading comprehension, and computer literacy up to grade level. Many of our children have been labeled as having Emotional Behavioral Disability (EBD). In public school classrooms, these children often face a stigma that makes succeeding very difficult. We offer one-on-one tutoring and support for the children and help them to believe in themselves even when the school system doesn't. We teach them to be dreamers. Our philosophy is that a dreamer can be anything that they want to be. Already quite a few of our students are rising to the top of their class and getting better grades than they ever have before. Our numbers are increasing and we have more students than ever. We would like to expand our program so that we never have to close our doors to a child in need. We often pick up students and drive them home because they do not have access to reliable transportation. We are raising money to get more transportation to accommodate all of our students. We would also like to get a larger space, as our current space is too small and run down. With a larger space we could attract more staff and volunteers, fit all of our children, and have more room for books, computers, and materials. Any donation would be amazing. We have a dream to grow our program and eventually create a charter school for children in need. We believe in our children's potential and refuse to let them be forgotten by the school system.
