BENEFITING: DREAMFAR HIGH SCHOOL MARATHON
ORGANIZER: DREAMFAR HIGH SCHOOL MARATHON
EVENT: 2015 Boston Marathon
Hi Guys! I'm so excited to be running the Boston Marathon (my first marathon!) with the Dreamfar Team. This year I've completed several races and I'm thrilled I have the opportunity to take the next step in running - a full 26.2 miles. A run from Hopkinton to Boston which usually takes 40 minutes DRIVING. Ok, I'm a little terrified.
BUT I really believe in the mission of the Dreamfar High School Marathon team which is:
...TO CHALLENGE HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS TO REACH THEIR FULL POTENTIAL – PHYSICALLY, SOCIALLY, EMOTIONALLY AND ACADEMICALLY – THROUGH A MENTOR-SUPPORTED MARATHON-TRAINING PROGRAM.
Dreamfar accomplishes its mission by addressing several of the issues that often get in the way of a student's success and enjoyment in high school. Dreamfar seeks to help each student – develop a sense of self-worth and self-respect – facilitate connections; in school with other students, teachers and adult mentors from the community – instill the value of hard work to use when tackling life's challenges in high school and beyond – and experience the value of a physically active lifestyle.
This mission inspires me because I've never been a "runner" until this year when I changed jobs and to avoid a (more) terrible commute from RI, I’d leave my house at 5:30 am to avoid traffic and arrive in Watertown at 6:30 am to work out before going to the office. I did this for 5 months until I eventually moved to Boston; over those 5 months, I started to run the Charles River path. Since starting at athenahealth, I’ve completed 3 half marathons, my last one under 2 hours, an accomplishment I never thought possible a year ago. I've gotten a lot out of this new lifestyle and I hope to give more students the opportunity to experience that.
Also, working with high school students to develop self-worth and self-respect has been an important part of my life. As a college student, I ran an arts program for first year college and area inner-city high school students that enriched their appreciation of the arts while simultaneously enhancing student’s self-esteem by giving them an opportunity to present and sell their artwork. I saw firsthand how a group like Dreamfar can make a difference.
As I team up with this worthwhile organization, train with my 4 fellow "athenistas," and run with my new city, I'd appreciate any support you can give. A monetary or raffle prize donation or lining up somewhere along the 26.2 miles on April 20th to cheer me on would be amazing. My company has already donated $10k (isn't that incredible?!) so I'll be fundraising for the additional $3500 throughout the Winter. Get excited!
Thanks in advance!
