BENEFITING: The Dreamfly
In early 2007, dreamfly partnered with The Citizens Foundation (TCF) to open a primary school in Akri, Pakistan, with the goal of bringing education to the local community. dreamfly's founder, Umaimah Mendhro, is originally from Akri and still has family living in that village - while at Harvard Business School, she saw the tremendous gap between the education she was receiving and how that had positively impacted her life, and what her first cousins were experiencing in Pakistan. Some of them didn't know how to read. This gap in opportunity motivated Umaimah to establish the school and enable Akri's children to dream big and go out and realize their vision.
In just four short years, the campus has grown to more than 135 students and has added a library and computer lab. The library is one of the most popular areas in the school, where students have access to books in several languages. Our students are bright and active kids and dreaming huge dreams which we strive to help them reach every day. You can meet a few of our little dreamers here: http://www.thedreamfly.org/ourdreamers/.
Unfortunately, in the summer of 2011, Akri suffered horrible rains that caused a levy to break, which flooded the village and our school. The entire first floor was submerged in 4 feet of water and many of our students and their families were forced to relocate to neighboring towns until the waters receded. We are happy to report that classes have resumed, but the school needs significant repairs to be fully operational. We are working with TCF on the rebuilding efforts and are making progress; however, there's still much to be done!
We ask that you help us rebuild our school and help our precious students have access to all the resources and facilities that they need to realize their dreams. Our total need is $11,000 for all repairs which will be funded through Crowdrise and various other fundraising events. Any donation amount helps us reach our goal - please do get involved in the rebuilding efforts to make our school whole again.
