BENEFITING: DRESS FOR SUCCESS SOUTH CENTRAL PA
ORGANIZER: DRESS FOR SUCCESS SOUTH CENTRAL PA
EVENT: Purple Purse Challenge
Hello and thank you for taking the time to read this.
My name is Darren Shaw and I am on the Board of Directors of Dress For Success, South Central PA. Since 2006 our organization has help over 9,000 women get back on their feet and back into the workplace through apparel donations, interviewing and resume-building training, and a support network that stays with the individual throughout their new life and career. By helping these women, we help their estimated 18,000+ children by creating conditions where they are safe, clothed, and fed.
From October 1st through October 27th the Allstate Foundation is holding their Purple Purse Challenge - a campaign that challenges over 160 charitable organizations to raise awareness and funds that will be used to help stem the tide of domestic abuse in this country.
Abuse can be physical, emotional, and psychological. Religion, skin color, sexual orientation, gender, age - none are immune.
As we have been serving the women in our region, we have sadly discovered that well over 40% of our clients have experienced domestic abuse - and those are just the ones who felt comfortable sharing this information with us.
Our organization combats domestic abuse through economic empowerment. "Why don't they just leave?" You've heard this statement before, right? How can you "just leave" when you have no job, no means of income, and no alternative environment in which to love and protect your kids? We help open the door - we give them help to find a way out.
I realize that each of us and our employers are frequently asked for charitable donations. I would simply ask that if you strongly believe that this is a problem in our society that must stop, then give whatever you believe is appropriate and makes sense for your family. I'd be equally happy with $1 as I would with $100 or $1000.
And I would also sincerely appreciate you forwarding this link to family and friends if anbd only if you feel comfortable doing so.
Again, thank you for reading this.
