BENEFITING: Beaumont Health System
EVENT DATE: Oct 19, 2014
The Dr. Charles A. Main Pediatric Cancer Survivor Scholarship Fundraiser is one of only a few such programs of its kind in the nation. Since its inception in 1990, the scholarship program has awarded nearly $1 million to more than 100 students to help them move forward in their lives. Dr. Charles A. Main and the staff at the Beaumont Hospital Pediatric Oncology and Hematology Department have given hope to thousands of families in the Metro Detroit Area and throughout the world.
The fund is named in honor of Dr. Charles A. Main, Chief of Pediatric Hematology/Oncology at Beaumont Hospitals, who wanted to encourage his young patients to overcome their health issues and strive to become independent and productive citizens.
The scholarship program was created to assist young cancer survivors in meeting the expenses of an advanced education and to honor outstanding achievements made by current and former patients of the Pediatric Hematology/Oncology Department at Beaumont Children’s Hospital in Royal Oak, Michigan.
The Charles A. Main, M.D Pediatric Cancer Survivor Scholarship Fund has been expanded to include medical grants to treat the late effects of the very treatments that saved the lives of these children. Common side effects include cardiac and respiratory issues, vision and hearing problems, delayed growth and development and learning disabilities.
Currently one of every 1,000 eighteen year olds in the United States is a survivor of childhood cancer. Their dreams of the future are clouded by the nightmares of their past. The years of chemotherapy, surgery, radiation therapy, bone marrow aspirations and hospitalizations exhausts the child’s energy and their parents’ savings. This, plus the years of missed school and lingering health effects due to their cancer treatments, leaves these young adults with little opportunity to attend college.
I was convinced to run the Detroit Marathon with someone who has been one of my greatest friends for over half my life. Running for myself gets pretty old after awhile, so I decided to run for the Dr. Charles A.Main Pediatric Cancer Survivor Scholarship Fundraiser.
I am asking for pledges for every mile that I run in training for the Detroit Marathon. Andy, who I am running the marathon with thinks we can run 700 miles by October 19th in preparation for the marathon. I will be recording my mileage on my mapmyrun.com website. Whether you would like to donate $0.01 per mile, $0.05 per mile, $0.10 per mile, $0.25 per mile, $0.50 per mile, or make a flat donation, any amount will be a huge help to the pediatric cancer survivors who will be able to pay for college because of your donations.
To make things interesting, for every $500.00 donated, I will do something fun and interesting and share the pictures and videos through facebook and this site. I will be taking requests for crazy things that I will do. Ideas so far include skydiving, get a tatoo, run into the Detroit river, go to Alaska, go bungee jumping, go run into the San Antonio river at the Riverwalk, go rock climbing, go to Hawaii, etc. Please send me your requests.
Thank you very much for checking out this site, and thank you in advance for your support of the Dr. Charles A. Main Pediatric Cancer Survivor Scholarship Fundraiser.
