BENEFITING: DEVELOPING WORLD MISSIONS INCORPORATED
The Dr. Sam Brisbane Fund for Support of JFK Memorial Medical Center was established to raise funds to provide support for disaster risk reduction and response efforts at the JFK Memorial Medical Center in Monrovia, Liberia. The fund is hosted and administered by Developing World Missions, Inc., a tax exempt non-profit organization organized under section 501(c)(3) of the IRS Code. The fund was established by a group of colleagues who have worked at JFK Memorial Medical Center through programs at Indiana University in honor of their friend and colleague, Dr. Sam Brisbane, who recently passed away from ebola virus disease after he contracted it selflessly tending to victims at JFK Memorial Medical Center.
The John F. Kennedy Memorial Medical Center is the national medical center of Liberia, and the primary tertiary treatment facility in the nation. It consists of a tertiary care hospital, a maternity hospital, an outpatient clinic, a number of medical training facilities and administrative buildings. The Medical Center was heavily impacted by the recent Ebola outbreak. A number of doctors and nurses have fallen ill to the disease, and the director of the emergency department, and one of the longest-serving doctors in Liberia, Sam Brisbane, died from the Ebola in July of 2014.
The objective of the fund is to advance disaster risk reduction and response efforts at the hospital through the provision of technical support and supplies. The fund will be used to support immediate disaster response needs related to the ongoing ebola outbreak (e.g,. the procurement and delivery of badly needed personal protective equipment such as gloves and face masks). Support for the provision of materiel will also be provided to the University of Liberia Dogliotti School of Medicine (DSM), a critical partner of Indiana University and JFK Memorial Hospital. The fund will also be used to support the provision of technical guidance around the JFK’s disaster risk reduction and emergency response planning as part of an existing and ongoing program led by the Indiana University Schools of Nursing and Medicine and the MESH Coalition.
Funds will be used for the following:
- Procurement and shipment of PPE to JFK Memorial Hospital and to the University of Liberia Dogliotti School of Medicine (DSM)
- Payment of travel expenses for experts in emergency management and disaster response from Indiana University, MESH and DWM to and from Monrovia, Liberia as part of an ongoing project to support infrastructure and capacity. JFK has agreed to cover room and board for these technical assistance providers.
- Procurement of needed supplies to implement the emergency management and disaster risk reduction programs at JFK Memorial Hospital (e.g., computers, etc.)
The Sam Brisbane fund is being graciously hosted by Developing World Missions, Inc, a humanitarian, non-profit, non-political organization dedicated to improving the quality of life in underdeveloped and underserved communities worldwide.
