This service/immersion trip to Santo Domingo is a chance to become immersed in the Dominican culture for 10 days. Our goal is to explore the Dominican culture and learn firsthand about the educational system and social justice issues by visiting and interacting with different communities. We are committed to broadening our horizons as we seek to educate ourselves and the next generation. Trip participants spend several days within schools volunteering. Students gain an understanding of the educational system in the Dominican Republic. We also visit other organizations that allow us to understand the most prevalent social justice issues that are impacting the country. We will use daily reflections to support one another in understanding this experience, one another, and the community.

While in the Dominican Republic, trip participants provide a minimum of 20 hours of volunteer service across an assortment of educational and community venues. The primary location for volunteering on this trip is Villa Bendición, an orphanage and faith-based school in Santo Domingo. To immerse themselves as fully as possible in the culture of the Dominican Republic presentations on history, culture, fine arts as well as visits to restaurants, civic and social justice organizations are part of this learning experience. The overall vision of this trip is to create an annual student-inspired service project that will build a long-term relationship with communities across the country.
