BENEFITING: Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary
Mass. Eye and Ear has a unique chance to advance one of the most innovative and potentially powerful research projects related to Alzheimer's and Parkinson's disease. Board member Diane Kaneb and her husband Al have pledged to give $100,000 to Mass Eye and Ear in support of a project spearheaded by Dr. Benjamin Bleier, a sinus surgeon, to deliver brain derived neurotropic factor (BDNF), a molecule with the promise of beating Alzheimer's disease to the brain... but there is a catch. This $100,000 will come in the form of a dollar-for-dollar match from other donors. So any gift given for support of this program will be matched - doubling the impact! Here is a link to a video of a seminar where Dr. Bleier presented his innovative research: https://vimeo.com/149053266. The password to access this video is eyemass. Also, his research was the cover feature of the latest Harvard Otolaryngology. Most people who know me know that my dad died of a dementing illness, and my mom suffers from Alzheimer's disease. This is personal. I also worked at the Alzheimer's Association for five years before going to Harvard Medical School to support the neurobiology department. In all that time, I have not seen any research capable of making an immediate impact as Ben's. Thanks everyone!
