THE STORY:

Hi, I'm Nuvia and I'm a senior at the Denver School of Science and Technology studying social action and how we can make a difference not only in our community, but in the world as a whole. Did you know that worldwide about 1 billion people live below the poverty line and survive on less than one dollar a day? Or that 800 million people around the globe go to bed hungry every single night? In our class we are learning about these facts and many more. We have also learned we can do something about it. We can make a difference. We are taking action. Over Spring Break, our class is travelling to the Williamson, West Virginia in the Appalachian Mountains one of the poorest regions of the United States. While there we will learn first hand what it means to live and survive in poverty. We will be working with Sustainable Williamson to create a replicable sustainable community model for low-income communities throughout Central Appalachia. Their goal to build networks in community health, food systems, sustainable energy generation, and local sustainable tourism is being achieved through different service projects. I’m very excited about this opportunity and need your help. I am trying to raise $900 in order to pay for my trip, which covers all my expenses including travel, food, lodging and instruction for seven days. Will you please make a donation to help me get to Appalachia? What is in it for you…? - Your gift is a tax deductible gift. As a recognized 501c3 Non-Profit Organization, DSST can accept donations for which you can take tax deductions. - You are a partner with me in my learning experience by supporting me. - You have the opportunity to be part of our class by contributing to our success. - You are joining the Fight against Poverty. Please fill out this form so I can keep accurate records of all my donation partners. Checks can be made out to the Denver School of Science and Technology, and, as I mentioned before, your gifts are tax deductible. Thank you so much for giving me the opportunity to communicate with you regarding this very important issue. We are thrilled to have this chance to learn so much and we couldn’t do it without your support. Sincerely, The DSST Service Learning Class

This sounds like an impactful project and a great experience. My entry into education was sparked on a Habitat for Humanity trip to rural Mississippi. I'm hopeful that this experience will have a similar impact on your life! 2 years ago
