On June 1st, we will be participating in Ultimate Hike, benefiting CureSearch for Children’s Cancer. In just one amazing day, we will be trekking across 28.3 miles of the Foothills Trail in North and South Carolina, traversing several significant peaks. The goal is to complete this extreme course in one very long day, rain or shine, AND raise $2,500 each for CureSearch for Children’s Cancer!

Julia, Jay, and I have decided to take on this challenge to raise awareness as well as money for CureSearch. CureSearch for Children’s Cancer, National Childhood Cancer Foundation, funds and supports targeted and innovative children’s cancer research with measurable results, and is the authoritative source of information and resources for all those affected by children’s cancer. CureSearch funds both local and national research, ensuring that a cure will be found as quickly as possible.

We are taking on this extreme endeavor in order to be part of something bigger than ourselves. We have climbed many peaks and tackled intense terrain over the past few years but never for a reason other than to benefit ourselves. In talking about our experiences, we realize that many children with cancer will not have the opportunity to take on a mountain or experience the wilderness as we have without real progress towards a cure. It provides us with great strength and courage to know that our actions are contributing to such a worthy cause.

The money we raise will help children like Eve (in the event photo). Eve was diagnosed with a bilateral anaplastic Wilms tumor on her second birthday. She underwent 12 weeks of aggressive chemotherapy at Duke Children's to shrink the thirteen tumors in her kidneys before surgery; in January 2010, Eve's surgeon was able to spare part of her left kidney, but unable to save the right. After surgery, she completed several more months of chemo in addition to radiation therapy. Eve has been off-treatment since May 2010 and her most recent scans show no evidence of disease. She celebrated her third birthday in October and recently had her fourth (and hopefully final) surgery to remove her port-a-cath. Please take 78 seconds out of your day to watch a video of Eve talking about UltimateHike here:
