I grew up hearing my parents sing songs called "The Negro Spiritual". For my mother at the end of a long day of housework, it was " I Don,t Feel No Ways Tired". I wondered how this could be? And when economic times got a little tough,
my father would sing, "Hold On Just A Little While Longer. EveryThing Will Be All Right." I loved the music and the rhythm of these songs, and as I got older I began to understand the depth of their meaning. These songs have ben my anchor for life!
The Spirituals were the beginning of an indigenously American Music. They in turn gave origin to such refractions as Blues, Gospel anf Jazz. This beautiful and meaningful music with echoes of Africa, bares the heart and soul of a people chronicling their trials and tribulations, triumphs and happiness and all aspects of life that are a part of the human condition.
I wanted to share the story of the Spiritual with the world. As a result Duffy Liturgical Dance Ensemble was born.
The mission of DuffyLit , a performing Arts Organization, is to study and perform the Spiritual in its authenticity. The singing is not separated from the movement.
DuffyLit is an intergenerational company of Singers and Dancers. We exist to perform the Spiritual and to educate audiences about the significance of this Art Form in American History.
Our Studio offers performances , Music and Dance Classes and workshops to the commuity.
Our focus is mainly on working with children. Through a curriculum based in the Spiritual, WE teach them to Engage Their Minds, Discipline Their Bodies and Develop Their Talents , following the example of our ancestors who engaged their minds by creating a body of music unsurpassed in beauty; disciplining the body through everyday hard labor, and developing their talents through singing and performing for each other the music that they had created.
We teach the children to value themselves. Self Worth , Self Respect and Self Esteem are the anchors of the curriculumn. We teach them to use the universal message of the Spiritual faith, hope, optimism and perseverance to remain strong in the face of the challenges, such as drugs, poverty and bullying, in their everyday lives.
