A Anonymous' Fundraiser:

Save Dying Languages

To most people, the statistic seems improbable, but it's a fact that every two weeks a language, somewhere in the world, dies. In fact, more than half of the languages we speak right now will die within the next century or sooner. It's not just a matter of maintaining global diversity, or preserving cultural identity, or providing for one small branch of academia -- when the last fluent speaker of a language dies, literally hundreds of generations of traditional knowledge encoded in his language die with him. And we, as a collective people, lose that knowledge.

And believe it or not, some of these languages are in your own backyard; in North America, there are over 160 endangered languages, and that's out of literally hundreds that were once spoken here. These and others around the world are dying out as politically, economically, or culturally dominant languages take over.

I'm raising money and awareness for the Living Tongues Institute, which documents, maintains, preserves, and revitalizes endangered languages around the world. They use a variety of creative techniques, and take advantage of new technology and software to do everything from creating dictionaries, to archiving documents, to teaching children through self-illustrated storybooks. And they rely soley on donations and grants to work across the globe helping communities struggling for cultural survival.
