Smarter Opportunities

Our mission is to transform (not just tweak a little, but completely transform) the opportunities for learning that are available to Rochester’s children.

Effective learning experiences

We aim to revamp the experiences our children have in school so that they’re truly prepared for success in college, in careers, and in life. The charter schools we support will have a culture of accountability and innovation.

World-class outcomes

And we plan to prove our success with the extraordinary results those children achieve. We believe in the meaningful use of data to improve performance.

How we’re achieving our goals

E3 Rochester is a 501(c) 3 non-profit organization formed for the express purpose of doing this work on behalf of Rochester’s city students—by recruiting, incubating and supporting the nation’s highest-performing public charter schools. We are a homegrown effort—led by local people with a passion for our children, and our community.

Our activities focus on:

Recruiting and helping high-performing charter school leaders and organizations as they work their way through the charter school authorization process.

We have recruited one of the nation’s best not-for-profit charter management organizations (CMOs), which is in the process of applying to the State University of New York to open a middle school in 2014.

We have purchased St. Bridget’s Church on Mark Street in Rochester’s northwest quadrant to be the site of our first school. We will continue to provide help in locating and securing facilities.

We have recruited the leaders of one of the best not-for-profit charter high schools in the nation, who will apply to open a charter high school in 2015.

Building community support for the growth of public charter schools—among leaders in business, education, government, the not-for-profit sector, clergy, and of course parents and teachers.

We are speaking and writing about our initiative, gathering the names of supporters, and forming strategic partnerships.
Our goal is to see our charter schools become vibrant hubs of activity and success within Rochester’s neighborhoods.

Raising funds for the start-up of new schools—from national and local foundations and businesses as well as citizens across the community. Our overall goal is to raise $30 million to seed new schools over the next five years.

Because New York State provides almost $13,500 for every child educated in a charter school, the new schools should be completely self-funding once they are established. They will educate Rochester’s children more effectively—and for less tax money than we’re currently spending.

E3 Rochester has recruited two new schools that will open in the Fall of 2014.

Visit their web sites for more information on the historical rankings of their schools or leaders in other cities: PUC Achieve Charter School (grades 5-8) and Vertus Charter School (for boys, grades 9-12). E3 Rochester is also supporting the launch of the Renaissance Academy of the Arts, grades K-6.
