EVENT DATE: Jun 21, 2013
United Way Silicon Valley is working with schools in the Alum Rock Elementary School District to ensure early learning success and strengthen families. National research shows that children who are proficient in reading in elementary school are much more likely to be successful later in life.
To learn more about the issue of Early Learning, please watch this short video. We need to make sure ALL the children are ready to learn on the first day of Kinder. And YOU can help us make that happen right here in San Jose.
The principles in the Alum Rock School District tell us from experience that too many children arrive at kindergarten unprepared for learning and without the skills they need to succeed. Kids who are behind when they enter kindergarten are often behind in 3rd grade. A child is 4 times less likely to graduate high school if they can’t read by the end of 3rd grade. That is why United Way works to ensure that more children are kindergarten ready when they start school and are reading proficient before they enter 4th grade.
The Bridge to Kindergarten program not only prepares the child for Kindergarten, but the parents as well. Support from the home is essential in the child's success, so the parent component is an important part of this effort.
You can help by making a donation to my Crowdrise campaign and make a difference to a child right here in your own community.
