THE STORY:

Lucy Catt wrote -

This story begins with a group of orangutans who are unable to be released back into the wild. Currently housed in cages, Orangutan Haven aims to construct a number of man-made islands that will provide new, open, natural homes for these beautiful animals.

Orangutan Haven will not only get these animals out of their cages, and back out into the open. It will also function as a conservation and education centre to change people’s current attitudes towards wildlife and the environment. As a leading eco-tourism site, Orangutan Haven will attract both local and international visitors.

The orangutans that will call Orangutan Haven home are pictured above. Meet Tila; Tila is unable to be released back into the wild because she has contracted human hepatitis. Then there is Leuser; Leuser was shot 62 times with an air rifle and has been left completely blind. And of course, the beautiful Dek Nong, who has severe arthritis and creeping paralysis. Finally, there is Gober and her twins. Gober was blind due to age-related cataracts. Gober and Leuser together produced healthy twins Ginting and Ganteng. Gober has responded incredibly well to cataract surgery and could potentially be released with her young back into the wild. Together these orangutans will call Orangutan Haven home.

The Sumatran Orangutan is currently listed as critically endangered. Current estimates of deforestation indicate that approximately 300 football fields of rainforest are cleared EVERY hour. Much of this deforestation is occurring due to the increasing demand for palm oil. Palm oil is all around us, often disguised as vegetable oil, it is in our food, our drinks, our soaps, our hair products, our make-up and even our cleaning products. This consumerism is what is pushing the orang-utans, and thousands of other species, to extinction. Orangutan Haven will educate local and international visitors on the plight of the orangutan, and the importance of protecting the last remaining rainforests, as well as providing new homes for orang-utans who can never be released back into the wild.

Really wonderful effort of you to save the lovely Orangutan. I am moved to tears with the suffering the lovely, gentle beings go through due to the destruction of their habitat. Building a home for those who cannot go back to the wild, is a really good initiative. I wish to donate more often, and perhaps every other month if possible. Thanks for letting us know how the lovely Orangutans are doing, and I would love to visit and volunteer someday soon. Lots of love. 5 years ago
