Jason Taylor wrote -At East Upper and Lower Schools ("East High School"), a food pantry was started earlier this year to challenge the food insecurity that many East scholars live with. Food insecurity is a major barrier to academic success, where a lack of hygiene supplies and the uncertainty of a next meal are major detriments to school concentration and attendance. While every East scholar is capable of academic success, some systemic factors, such as food insecurity, work against their true potential. All proceeds will go to supplying East's pantry with emergency food and resource items. In just five months of operation, the pantry has served over 75 scholars. Scholars requiring food and resource assistance can confidentially use the pantry to take necessary items home. The pantry is one important way that East's scholars can be holistically supported as they make a successful transition into adulthood.
