Champions to raise money for individuals in the Capital Region and Eastern Connecticut affected by neurological impairments

FUND A TREATMENT…CHANGE A LIFE
A Very Special Opportunity to Donate
This year’s Fund A Treatment mission will be represented by the Kasner Family from Avon, CT. Barbie and Ken are delighted to serve as Chairs for the committee and look forward to speaking at our annual Crystal Ball on May 7, 2016 to raise awareness and necessary funds for individuals in the Capital Region and Eastern Connecticut affected by various neurological impairments due to injury, illness or cognitive disorders and are in need of financial assistance for critical treatment and services.
The Kasners strongly identify with Easterseals’ mission given their own experience and journey with their son, Kevin. Their incredible story is one of perseverance, strength and achievement.
“Our son Kevin, a perfectly healthy 24 year-old second-year medical student with the same dreams all young adults dream, went to bed one night only to wake up several hours later on the floor with his fiancée by his side in a room filled with chaos and EMTs. Completely unaware of the circumstances surrounding him and unable to remember his own name or answer simple questions, Kevin was rushed to the hospital where, within hours, he was told he had a sizeable tumor located in the right frontal lobe of his brain. Two weeks later, after the second hours-long surgery to remove as much of the tumor as possible, we received the shocking diagnosis: Anaplastic Astrocytoma III, an aggressive form of brain cancer. Treatment began immediately with thirty-three rounds of combined radiation/chemotherapy followed by an additional six months of aggressive chemotherapy."
But here’s where the story becomes so incredible and why the Kasners believe in Easterseals’ programs and services, making it possible for individuals with any form of neurological damage or illness believe that they, too, can achieve their goals of living productive, independent, full lives.
"Despite being diagnosed on the first day of his second year of medical school and enduring nine months of intense therapy and treatments, Kevin continued to attend classes and labs, completing and passing all of his coursework, and taking his last final exam on the same day of his last chemotherapy treatment. Three months later he sat for and passed his Step One exam with a favorable passing score. He is now nearing the end of this third year of school and preparing to apply for residencies following his graduation in May, 2017.
Even with the finest medical care, doctors and treatments, Kevin’s recovery and future rehabilitation needs are still not 100% clear. Recurrence of AAIII is common and unpredictable in its’ form, so while he has not personally had a need to reach out to Easterseals for services, it’s reassuring to know that they are there for him should he ever need the resources and support available without being turned away and without charge. Please remember the many young adults currently seeking Easterseals’ numerous neurological services and who rely on Fund A Treatment donations to continue to receive the necessary treatments to overcome the otherwise insurmountable rehabilitative obstacles they face every day of their lives. Let’s give them a reason to believe that they, too, can achieve their goals!”
