Through Pencil, a fantastic non-profit organization I am going into my second year as a business partner with Park East High School, in East Harlem. To kick off the school year I recently participated in Principal for a Day. This experience was extremely humbling and gave me a glimpse into the day- to- day of running a school and the struggles that administrations face to provide the basics for their very deserving students.
During my visit I learned about the basketball team and the great success they had last season. The team has performed so well over the years, they have been moved up to the A-Division. The team is in need of new uniforms and given the continued budget cuts, the school does not have the funds to properly outfit the team with uniforms for the upcoming season.
This is where all of you come in!
On November 6th I will be running the NYC Marathon. As I prepare to run 26.2 miles through the five boroughs of NYC, I ask for your help. Now, I will be doing the hard work and pounding the pavement for four plus hours. Can you support me? A $1 per mile? Maybe $2?
Anything you can give to support my run will be greatly appreciated! My goal is to raise $1500.00, with all donations going directly to support East Harlem Pride Basketball team. That will be enough to outfit the entire team!
Those of you, who know me, know I am far from an athlete. But these high school students are and they should be given every opportunity to shine!
Some background on the team from their coach…….
Last year, the East Harlem Pride boys basketball team set records in every conceivable category; offensive, defensive, regular season wins (16), regular season losses (0), and made it deeper into the playoffs than any boys team ever had. Because of our success, the PSAL decided it was time to move the boys team up into the A-division, which is something we are incredibly proud of and excited about.
All of our success last year was accomplished during the slimmest of budget years and concessions had to be made in order to accommodate an ever-growing sports program. All season our basketball team was subject to repeated embarrassment during away games because of ill-fitting and poor quality away jerseys, which we could not afford to replace. We won in spite of low quality uniforms, but the need for respectable and appropriate, high-quality equipment is a must as we move into a higher caliber of NYC PSAL basketball. We would sincerely appreciate any assistance you could offer.
Thank you for your support!
