BENEFITING: MINDS MATTER
EVENT DATE: Jan 20, 2013
HOURS PLEDGED: 45
Mileage Tracker: 166
A few of my favorite signs:
- Worst Parade Choreography EVER!
- First Pain, then Vodka (to which I asked the sign holder, "Are you buying?")
- You Look Hot When You're Sweaty
- Good Luck from the Disney Custodial Crew! (while we ran through the back alleys of Disneyland)
- Free Beer (at mile 12.5 - I wonder how many people took these guys up on their offer)
I finished the race in 2:40:46, encouraged by my sister & her boyfriend who had driven down to support me. I also spent a little time in "Spa Mickey" - otherwise known as the med tent, for dehydration post race. A little O2 and IV fluids (straight vodka, I was told) and some TLC from some very handsome medics.
The most important part of this race is all of you, and the folks at Minds Matter. Together, we raised 120% of my original goal - a total of $840. THANK YOU. For your support, and for putting up with my incessant announcements on Facebook, Twitter and in person. :) You rock!
Pictures to follow, once I've had a chance to recover a bit. And have that beer. :)
UPDATE 1/18/13: Less than 48 hours from now, I'm going to get up at the crack of dawn and run through Disneyland with nearly 22,000 other people! I've run over 150 training miles, consumed gallons of water, dozens of electrolyte tablets and many packets of really disgusting tasting "nutrition" packets, otherwise known as "Gu." And thanks to you, I'm running with the knowledge that we've exceeded our fundraising goal! Minds Matter and the students we mentor will have over $800 for their program this year. THANK YOU!
UPDATE 1/14/13: 5 days til race day, and now I get to run in sub-40 degree temps at the crack of dawn to prep for the actual race! I feel like a popsicle with legs, but your generosity warms my heart. Nearly $800 raised for Minds Matter! You are amazing.
UPDATE 1/3/13: Thanks to you, we've hit 100% of the $700 fundraising goal for Minds Matter. THANK YOU from the bottom of my heart, for taking the time out of your day to come here and offer your donation. Any and every amount is an act of supreme generosity, and for that I am truly grateful. If you haven't donated yet, and you would like to, please do so: this page will stay running until race day. Meanwhile the training continues... and so will the updates here and on my Facebook page. You're the wind beneath my iron-on metallic wings. (See picture at left.) ;)
UPDATE 1/2/13: Happy New Year! T-18 days and 18% left to raise before hitting my fundraising goal! Thank you to everyone who has donated so far, and thanks in advance to those generous souls who will be donating to the cause!
Once Upon A Time...
My mother used to tell me the only thing she could really give me and my sister was our education, and I took that to heart. This year, I started mentoring a Sophomore in High School as part of Minds Matter in Los Angeles.
Minds Matter is an organization with chapters across the US that provides mentors to high-achieving students from low income families to help those students make the transition from high school to college. This includes tutoring in Math and SAT prep, critical thinking discussions, and real world practice in leadership and debate. And each summer, students are sponsored to attend learning programs at Universities across the country. You can learn more about them here: http://mindsmatterla.org/site/
So what does Pixie Dust have to do with Minds Matter? I love being a mentor, and having the opportunity to give back through mentorship. Since Minds Matter is a 100% volunteer organization, we rely on fundraising to meet the needs of the program. And since I'm running the Tinkerbell Half Marathon in Anaheim this January, I've decided to use this run as an opportunity to encourage mentorship and help raise money for Minds Matter.
Would you kindly consider a donation of $13.10 ($1 per mile, or as much or as little as you can afford) to Minds Matter? In addition to making a tax-deductible donation to a great organization, you're cheering me on as I run in a sparkly green tutu. (Yes, I am running in costume. And yes, I will post pictures.)
In summary: Donate $13.10 for 13.1 miles and in return: Ratana runs through Disneyland in a tutu, You get a nifty tax deduction, a giggle at me sweating through my sparkles, the satisfaction of helping a great cause, and my deep and heartfelt gratitude.
Thank you so much and... EAT MY PIXIE DUST!
...And they Ran Happily Ever After...
