Renaming our Future: #EbolaNow Relief
Organized by: Shane Brownell
EVENT DATE Nov 16, 2014
The Ebola Now Relief campaign began as a result of the passion we have for the people of Liberia and the greater region most dramatically affected by the Ebola crisis.
We are "Now-ists."
Joi Ito, in his galvanizing TED talk (www.ted.com/talks/joi_ito_want_to_innovate_become_a_now_ist?language=en#t-732800), coined this term – Now-ist – to describe us – modern innovators who aren’t afraid to move to action quickly, improve constantly as we go along, and accomplish massive goals in super-compressed timing.
To us, "Now-ist" = Intentional Impact + Inspiring Passion.
Please join us in reaching our goals!
Our primary goal today is to help with the Ebola crisis. Our longer-term vision is to affect the social infrastructure in this region – to educate and empower – in order to reduce the risk of future crises and to build the resources to enable the Liberian people to manage through challenges more independently.
TODAY: It is estimated that 1.4 million people could potentially be impacted by the Ebola virus. There is so much we can and must do to ensure this does not happen. Join us in supporting local awareness programs and Clorox bucket projects (more on this below). Our goal is to raise as much funding as possible to have a greatest impact on isolated schools, communities, clinics and townships in Liberia.
Short Term: It starts with water.
Simply providing access to clean water, and therefore to improved hygiene, will massively reduce the transmission of disease of all types. WASH – Water, Sanitation and Hygiene projects are critical in accomplishing this.
Ebola Now Relief will use funds to support six (6) well projects that will bring clean water to remote communities.
Longer Term: Inspiring Passion + Inspiring Change (Liberia Innovates)
Our true passion lies in finding long-term solutions. How do we find a way to teach and encourage people, young and old, to solve their own problems? Our sustaining goal is to break dependency, to foster a better environment and inspire a new generation through practical ideas, solutions and models for change.
Using the GMin Model (gmin.org) from Sierra Leone, Kenya, and South Africa, we plan to inspire 10 teams of students and young adults to tackle Health, Energy, Innovation, Transportation, Communication, Poverty and Corruption.
Our finalists will become teachers, helping to inspire passion in their local communities.
Following the "Dead Aid" Philosophy (presented in the book Dead Aid: Why Aid Is Not Working and How There Is a Better Way for Africa by Dambisa Moyo), it is our goal that each student challenge becomes marketable, intentionally impactful (solving region-specific issues) and sustainable. Funding for these projects must have a limited time frame to promote and ensure local growth and change.
Your donations will:
Support youth in Liberia to innovate for their own progress. $250 will enable a student team to go from the idea phase to the market phase. All students will receive mentorship, partake in design workshops and be connected to a host of local and international resources. Our goal is to inspire 100 teams over three (3) years of GMin/InChallenge Competitions.
WASH Projects - $3500 will drill a well and provide clean water initiatives, healthcare and education. Our goal is to drill six (6) wells.
Awareness + Clorox Bucket Program: $250 will support an awareness campaign in a local community. Our goal is 80 isolated communities, but if we only reach 20 communities we've still made a huge impact on the crisis. Community Mobilization. Educate communities on how to prevent the spread of Ebola. Help Equip more front-line responders with personal protective equipment. #UnitedAgainstEbola
