THE STORY:

This campaign is to raise funds to purchase materials needed to equip the Sulyaman Junkung General Hospital in Bwiam, The Gambia for handling cases of Ebola.

The Sulyaman Junkung General Hospital (SJGH) is one of five general hospitals in The Gambia, a small country in West Africa bordered on three sides by Senegal, and on the forth by the ocean.

The Ebola epidemic currently terrorizing the region has recently made a new conquest in spreading into Senegal. It is the belief of the Gambian Ministry of Health, as well as global health experts, that it is only a matter of time before the virus crosses the border into The Gambia.

Resources and funds at the Gambian MoH are stretched thin, and they need help to properly equip hospitals with the materials that will be required to help contain and handle Ebola cases should they arise. International funding is going largely towards containment in actively infected areas. Power Up Gambia, a U.S. based 501(c)3 non-profit has long partnered with SJGH to bring solar energy technology to Gambian health facilities, and is now turning its sights on helping the hospital get Ebola-ready in an effort to contain the epidemic once it hits.

Funds will be used to purchase:

[Equipment]

Goggles, masks, sprayers (5), Non-contact infrared thermometers (5), rechargeable batteries, rubber boots (20), rubber elbow gloves (20), plastic overalls and head covers (20), glucometers and strips (10), pulse oxymeters (10), sphygnomanometers, stethoscopes.

[Materials]

Waste baskets, garbage bags, sanitizer.

[Medications]

Diazapam, Phenobarbitone, IV fluids (lactates, salines).

MY STORY:

I was fortunate to have the opportunity to intern at SJGH in the Summer of 2014 with the hospital's Public Health Department. While there, I designed an implemented six projects addressing a range of needs within the hospital and at isolated clinics throughout the country. This campaign is one of a few ways I am continuing my work with PuG and SJGH remotely.
