BENEFITING: EBONY SHOWCASE THEATRE AND CULTURAL WORKSHOP
My father is often remembered as the voice of Disney's Brer Bear in Song of the South and as the character, Lightnin' (the janitor in the baseball cap) from the Amos 'n' Andy TV show; but he and my mother, Edna, did much more than that. They created the historic Ebony Showcase Theatre in 1950, a legitimate theatre where they produced plays, concerts, fashion shows, recitals, and more; as well as a community center, for all phases of the arts, where classes, meetings, and community events were held. The now-abolished Community Redevelopment Agency demolished the theater building in 1998 on my birthday. The other buildings in the compex were demolished later.
We need the help of friends and fans: We are cleaning, and want to refurbish, a boarded-up hospital and we must raise seed-money for the work so we can continue my parent's legacy. Please help us by purchasing items from our online store, supporting our sponsors, making a donation of items or money (no amount is too small; every dollar will help), and telling others about our goals.
