Ebony's Survival and Scholastic Fund
Organized by: Ebony Oldham
EVENT DATE Oct 31, 2015
I am a 25-year-old social justice, liberation-seeking, activist, organizer, writer and soon to be, again, college student.
With fortune, I obtained a degree in Ethnic Studies, (the interdisciplinary study of difference – chiefly race, ethnicity, and nation, but also inclusive of sexuality, gender – and power expressed by the state, civil society and individuals) with an emphasis on Women and Gender Studies from the University of Oregon. Since graduating, I have had the privilege of working as a radical community and political organizer in a number of capacities.
Capitalizing on my most recent endeavor, I was employed as a time-limited, Environmental Justice Organizer, but the organization was unable to financially sustain my position long term. In my transition, I was able to adapt quickly and save enough funds to live, somewhat comfortably, and still engage in activism and movement building all over the country for nearly 3 months. At this time, my savings are rapidly lessening and I am asking for support.
Being a first generation college student often meant leaning on those in community, to help guide me in the right direction. Family, friends, peers, mentors and mentee’s have all invested countless time, energy, prayers, love, food, hope and encouragement into me and this is undoubtedly, why I continue and have, made it, this far.
This fall I will be attending Portland State University as a post-baccalaureate student for some prerequisite courses and then, in January as a Masters student in the Post-secondary Adult and Continuing Education (PACE) with an emphasis on Student Affairs in Higher Education, Service-Learning, Community-Based Learning and Training and Development. Though, in order to ensure that I will be able to attend school in the fall for my very few courses and not continue to overload in debt (as a Post-Bacc student), coupled with my unemployment, I am asking for financial assistance. I humbly present to you all, an opportunity to invest in me, again.
If you are unable to give a monetary donation, I appreciatively welcome your radical, unapologetic, love, advice, healing, accountability and encouragement on this journey. The ask: $3,000 to support (some of my) living, transportation and scholastic needs.
*I am willing to write, speak, teach workshops for donation as well. Please contact me for resume and references if interested.
