Have you ever heard about the problems faced by students in low-income communities and asked yourself, "is there anything I could do to help?"
Well here is your opportunity to do so!
Students in low-income communities need the opportunity to explore and see the world outside of their community. However, when considering the costs, this is asking for too much. Parents in these communities are sometimes working two jobs and/or dependent on the government to get by in life.
SWBATE,Inc. was created to help break the cycle. By providing students with the chance to participate in mini study abroad opportunities we are giving them the chance to see there is a world outside of the one they are used to seeing. This trip will help spark the creativity inside each of them and give them the motivation and drive they need in order to succeed.
I created this fundraiser and nonprofit organization because I remember being in High School and hearing of an opportunity to go to Spain. So I went home and spoke to my mother about it and of course her answer was "no, we cannot afford that." I was dissappointed and upset but I knew there was nothing I could do about it. Later, when I was in college, I heard of opportunites to study abroad. I was super excited to learn about how I could finally get the chance to take advantage of this opportunity but I soon realized that I once again could not afford it. Instead of giving up I searched for scholarships that will afford me the chance to go abroad. In the end, I received a scholarship to study abroad in Ghana, West Africa for a winter session and another scholarship to study abroad in China for a summer. Both of those experiences abroad helped to shaped me into the person I am today. Not only did it spark my interest in travelling, but I also became culturally diversed, understanding of people from different backgrounds, and marketable in the work force. Later on, as a classroom teacher, it has helped me to connect with students from different countries. If it wasn't for the help that I've gotten to study abroad I may not have been where I am today.
