On April 16, a 7.8-magnitude earthquake hit Ecuador, crippling much of the country. Current estimates place more than 2,500 people injured, but the Ecuador Red Cross anticipates some 100,000 to be affected. Some 300 aftershocks have already rocked the coastal country, some as high as 6.1 on the Richter scale. The need for aid is dire.
In an ABC News report, President Rafael Correa said the cost of rebuilding would reach into the billions of dollars and the impact on the country’s fragile economy “could be huge.” As he met with survivors, many told him that their main concern: Where they could get clean water. Survivors, with no where to go, curled up on mattresses or plastic chairs next to the rubble of their homes. They are among the 20,000 people who have been rendered homeless.
