A series of powerful earthquakes in Ecuador has left thousands of families in the Pacific Coastal Provinces of Esmeraldas and Manabí without safe drinking water, a situation that can quickly lead to severe disease outbreaks. One of Groundswell International’s founders, Stephen Sherwood, lives in Ecuador, where he has been working with agroecology and food movements over the last 15 years to build strong, resilient families and communities. We want to do something to help the victims, so we are teaming up with Steve, Sustainable World Ecuador (a local social enterprise dedicated to making available quality, cost-effective water purifiers), and on-the-ground volunteers to supply safe drinking water for hard-hit families. Under the conditions of the coast, each diatom ceramic, activated carbon purifier will filter 6,000 liters of disease-free drinking water – the equivalent to what a family of four uses in one year. Your donation of $40 will provide a family a water purifier and an orientation on filter maintenance. For transparency, we'll maintain a registry of each beneficiary and geo-referenced image as documentation.
