IF WE REACH $1000 BY JULY 31…
Eddie will record a video singing a song of *your* choice! Write-in a song from the options below when you donate to our Crowdrise page. The more you donate, the more likely your song will be chosen, e.g., $20 donation and “All of Me” = 20 entries for “All of Me.” After the marathon, I will pool the “entries” and do a random drawing.
- Alicia Keys - Diary
- Bruno Mars - Locked Out Of Heaven
- Darren Criss - Teenage Dream (Piano Version) (Katy Perry Cover)
- Elvis Presley / Haley Reinhart - Can’t Help Falling In Love
- Etta James - At Last
- John Legend - Ordinary People
- Journey - Open Arms
- Leonard Cohen or KD Lang - Hallelujah
AND IF WE REACH OUR GOAL OF $2500 BY JULY 31…
We (Eddie and Jeff) will also post a video of us doing the most entertaining amateur drag performance you’ve ever seen :)
And now on to the backstory
On July 31st, we will be running together in the San Francisco Marathon. Jeff will start at midnight and run the marathon course in reverse. Getting to the start line before 5 am, he will join Eddie and thousands of other runners to run the full course again in the San Francisco Marathon. This will be Eddie's first marathon (26.2 miles), and Jeff's first ultra marathon--a huge challenge for both of us!!
Why would we embark on such foolishness? Besides the natural high of running (or something like that), we are raising money for Recovery On Water (R.O.W.) as a tribute to Jeff's grandma. Jeff's grandma passed away from cancer in November 2013. Before she passed away, she was an avid supporter of Jeff's athletics. Jeff last saw her alive in November 2012 when she came to watch him race in Ironman Arizona. Jeff still remembers how she stayed outside at the finish line long after dark when she was getting cold without her jacket, because she wanted to see him finish. To all the world she looked like the picture of health then.
R.O.W. is a rowing team in Chicago that supports and empowers breast cancer survivors. Regular exercise reduces the recurrence of cancer. But R.O.W. is more than just that. Rowing is a true team sport that only works when everyone rows together. The team provides camaraderie and social support, both on and off the water. These are the athletes that are truly inspiring. Not the strongest or the fastest, but the ones who are showing up everyday to fight their own battles.
Eddie and Jeff agreed that we wanted to raise money for cancer as a tribute to Jeff's grandma. But we also wanted to support a local charity like R.O.W., where we can see where the money we raise goes and meet the people that we are supporting. In those long miles at the end of the San Francisco Marathon, knowing who we are running for will make a big difference in our own races. R.O.W. is exactly the sort of program that Jeff's grandma would have supported. And if Jeff's grandma were still alive, she would be there to watch Eddie and Jeff cross the finish line together!
