BENEFITING: DAYS FOR GIRLS INTERNATIONAL
EVENT DATE: Nov 12, 2016
Dear Friends and Family,
I would like to ask you, if you were planning to buy me a gift to celebrate my becoming a bat mitzvah, to instead donate the nonprofit organization Days for Girls. I chose this cause because I believe that girls should have the same opportunities as boys.
Days for Girls supplies kits of feminine hygiene products to girls in the Middle East and Africa. Without these supplies, these girls would be forced to stay home from school during their periods. One girl was having to use a corn husk instead of a pad and got a horrible infection.
Raising money for Days for Girls is important to me because this organization is sticking up for girls’ rights. Before I had read the stories of these young girls, I never knew how drastic not having supplies for your period could be. This is important to me because girls should not be held back for something they can’t control. These young women are missing school, getting infections, and are sometimes forced into unwanted sexual encounters in order get funding for supplies so that they can attend school. In a world of male dominance, women need to be able to have their own thoughts and feelings and be able to express them. Having women not be able to know about the world they live in is just not fair. If boys can go to school, girls should be able to, too.
I have set up a donation campaign through Crowdrise. My goal is to raise $3,000. I am also having a drive at Congregation Beth Am and would love if you could bring supplies such as hotel soap, colorful cotton or flannel fabric, washcloths, gallon-sized ziplock freezer bags, and girl’s cotton brief underwear sizes 10-16.
I want to thank you for taking the time to read my letter. I’m very grateful to have you as my friends and family. This organization is very important to me and I would love it if you could donate to it instead of buying me a gift.
Thank you so much,
