THE STORY:

What's better than solving one problem?

Solving two, at the same time.

Edible History: restoration of vacant historic structures while delivering targeted community needs.

Pique your interest? Cool. Keep reading.

The pilot Edible History project is located in Cleveland's St Clair Superior neighborhood. A pre-civil war home will be a model for creative reuse that will engage the public in healthy eating and lifestyles. The house will serve as a food cooperative distribution center and a place for learning studios to occur. Neighboring vacant land will create an edible apothecary helping supply the cooperative and surrounding neighborhood. The learning studios will offer an array of classes, such as neighborhood history, cooking classes, health and wellness seminars, and healthy eating classes for youth.

But can this project be replicated?

Yes. Edible History is a new concept, replicable in similar vacant historic structures throughout Cleveland and telling a unique history of the city along the way. Once the pilot Edible History house is established we will identify additional historic vacant structures throughout Cleveland that could serve as future Edible History locations. Each location will be unique; displaying the history of each home and community, while also focusing on specific public needs in that area.

How will the house be restored?

The exterior of the home will be a historically accurate restoration while the interior of the home will be lofted in order to create an open, more amenable community space. The interior walls of the home will become museum-like with historical pictures and research about the home and neighborhood.
