Edible Schoolyard NYC is eager to expand our already growing garden program in East Harlem, but we need your help! Our site at P.S./M.S. 7 and Global Tech Middle School serves over 600 students as well as the local community. We need $50,000 to take our program one step further and we need your help to make this next step possible.
The money raised through this campaign will go towards vital infrastructure improvements – new wooden and metal planters for our lower and upper courtyard, a drip irrigation system, trees, edible plants, benches for our gathering circle, and an arbor. In addition, these funds will go toward our most important resource – our amazing and dedicated teachers.
Our students attend garden classes as they would any other elective, only here they can get their hands dirty growing a variety of organic fruits, vegetables, and grains. The seed-to-table education continues in our kitchen classroom, where students come together to prepare, cook, and share a seasonal, garden-fresh feast. Our after-school programs and family nights reinforce what our students learn during the day, and our farm stand provides an opportunity for students to share with the community what they’ve been learning and serves as a source of fresh, local food for neighborhood residents.
East Harlem is a culturally and ethnically diverse neighborhood that we are extremely proud to call home. Unfortunately, it is also the neighborhood with the highest jobless rate in NYC, where 37% of people live below the poverty line and 30% live in public housing. In fact, East Harlem has the highest geographic concentration of low-income public housing projects in the US. It is also an area plagued by obesity and diet-related diseases – 60% of adults in East Harlem are obese or overweight (compared to just 10% on the Upper East Side, just a few blocks away).
Edible Schoolyard NYC is dedicated to helping kids that can benefit the most from an edible education, arming them with the knowledge and skills needed to make healthy food choices throughout their lives.
In just one year, we have seen our students dive into gardening and cooking lessons. They consistently show their love for the plants they grow and eat. We couldn’t agree with our students more when they say things like:
It tastes like 'I love you.'" - 2nd grader, eating persimmon
"I hear the plants saying, 'Thank you!'" - Kindergartener, while watering in the garden
When you make a gift to Rooting for Harlem, you make a gift to a healthier future for the children of NYC, and specifically East Harlem. You also become a part of the Edible Schoolyard NYC family. We hope you will consider supporting our future in East Harlem.
Invest in our community, make our expanded garden a reality, and help us ROOTforHARLEM today!
