BENEFITING: OKLAHOMA CITY NATIONAL MEMORIAL FOUNDATION
EVENT: OKLAHOMA CITY MARATHON 2016
EVENT DATE: Apr 24, 2016
I will run in memory of Julie Marie Welch a young adult (23). She was an Spanish language interpreter for the center and was working in the day care nursery on the day of the bombing. Her father is a strong opponent to the death penalty. I heard him speak at a conference several years after the bombing and I was moved by how proudly he described his daughter. He told us about his meeting the father of the bomber Timothy McVeigh in his home and how he realized that Mr. McVeigh would never be able to describe his son in that way for the rest of his life. Bud Welch promised Mr McVeigh that he would work to keep McVeigh from being executed as a result of that meeting. All efforts failed and he was executed. The two fathers became great friends on the day of their meeting and have continued to support each other in their loss. This experience called me to be a more compassionate person.
